Madhattan
by Paul Otteson

Synopsis & Author Comment: This journal entry from a larger round-the-world journey follows our race from Syracuse, NY, to Amsterdam, with a focus on our 20 hours in Manhattan. It can easily be adapted and expanded into a look at how to get the most out of a short stay in the Big Apple. The 650-word journal segment is currently archived at Hostels.com.
Lead Text: "Yeah baby, start spreadin' the word -- it's happenin' in Manhattan. Leaving the simple pleasures of family behind in the comparatively simple "city" of Syracuse, Mary and I hit the Big Apple. We drove down with Mary's sister to her home in northern New Jersey, hooked up with an old high school buddy of mine affectionately known as "Wilk", and grabbed a train into the city.

While I'm generally an advocate of easing into new settings in order to get the big picture, it's a blast to pop up out of Penn Station into the heart of town. We walked 2K to our definitely-not-a-hostel suite at the superb W New York hotel, heading north through Times Square, then east down 50th past Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. Even after several visits, it's impossible not to be impressed -- Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore."
