Home / Indexes T r a v e l W r i t i n g ThailandIt's Thai Time by Paul Otteson Synopsis & Author Comment: This journal entry from a larger round-the-world journey covers a 6-day stint in Thailand, including a tour of the wonders of Bangkok and three days on the island of Ko Samet. Currently archived as an 850-word journal segment, I can easily reform the piece on short notice to suit publication criteria, focusing on either Bangkok or Ko Samet, or on a related topic. Lead Text: "After South Asia, Bangkok offers a shock of development with plenty of western overtones. McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen, Nike, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe, etc. -- logos galore assault the senses. We arrived at Don Muang Airport at about 6:30 p.m., dropped one of our bags at 'left luggage', and grabbed the airport shuttle bus to Banglamphu -- the main budget travelers area in Bangkok. The Viengtai Hotel was our sleep site for two nights. We had airport-made reservations and were willing to pay a bit for comfort ($35 US), but Khao San Street in the heart of Banglampu is packed with guest houses that range from cheap to cheaper to damn-near-free. If you visit at any time but the winter high season, you should have little trouble finding a budget bed. There's even the Marco Polo Hostel, right on the main drag." |
