Railing Away

Synopsis & Author Comment: I am a veteran Amtrak traveler, having covered virtually all of Amtrak's routes in the western U.S. This journal entry from a larger round-the-world journey relates the pleasures of rail travel in the western U.S. My wife and I enjoyed the lower 48's best rail route -- the California Zephyr from San Francisco to Denver. Currently archived as a 775-word journal segment, I can easily reform the piece on short notice to suit publication criteria.

There's a feeling you get at night on a long-distance train in the empty lands of northern Nevada. With no lights outside, you can't easily tell which way the train is going. There's only a very gentle rocking and bouncing, and the muffled rhythm of wheels clacking on rails. Indeed, at times, it's easy to believe the train is standing still."
